World news or international news is the media jargon for news about events happening around the globe. This is different from domestic news, which refers to stories about things happening in a specific country or area.
Until recently, only large newspapers had the resources to send reporters abroad and cover international events. The advent of telecommunications made this possible. This is when the first news agencies were founded, like Reuters (UK), AP (US) and AFP (France). News outlets also hire journalists who specialize in covering international affairs. These are known as foreign correspondents.
While some of the major news agencies prepare hard news and feature articles for their own publications, they also sell these stories to other media organizations for use in their daily newspapers. These articles are known as wire stories. Originally, these were transmitted via telegraphy; now they are usually sent over the Internet. Individuals, corporations, analysts and intelligence agencies may also subscribe to the services of these news agencies.
The Weekly World News was a tabloid newspaper that ran in black-and-white from 1979 to 2007. It was founded by Generoso Pope Jr and edited by Eddie Clontz, a former copy editor at small newspapers. The newspaper was notorious for its outlandish, sometimes satirical “news” stories. It often focused on conspiracies and supernatural themes, such as alien abductions, the Loch Ness monster and Bigfoot. It also covered alleged religious relics such as the Ark of Truth, as well as lost prophecies and religious texts. In later years, WWN devoted considerable coverage to cryptids, such as mermen and half-bat/half-human creatures called Bat Boys.
